The sheep of the Good Shepherd

 At that time, sheep used to enter the sheepfold by a very narrow door, one after another, this made it easy to count them. In the morning, shepherds would take their cattle to graze. The first to get there whistled so that his sheep could recognize him and they immediately reacted. The other sheep would not even move,  because the voice they heard was not that of their shepherd.

"I am the good shepherd" "It's not you who chose me, but I who chose you." Unlike what is common in our region, where the shepherd usually closes up behind the flock, Jesus walked first, tracing the way, and being the first to cross the dangerous paths. All he orders​​, He has first executed himself. He knows each of his disciples by name, and they also know Him, but their mutual understanding is not purely of intellectual order, but the work of love. While it is true that shepherds protect their flocks against the attacks of wolves, it's very rare that they die to save them. The good Shepherd of the gospel is not content with only preserving the life of his sheep, but willingly He gives his own life for them.

The Gospel is our guide: the Eucharist, the food that renews our strength. Note, however, that Jesus does not invite us to a solitary enterprise: We can only follow him if we are incorporated into the society of which he is the Head, into the community of his disciples, the Church.

   En aquell temps, les ovelles entraven a la cleda per una sola porta bastant estreta, una darrere l'altra, això permetia que es poguessin comptar amb facilitat. Al matí, els pastors anaven a treure el seu ramat a pasturar. El primer pastor d'arribar xiulava per fer-se reconèixer de les seves ovelles, les quals de seguida reaccionaven. Les altres ovelles ni tan sols es movien, ja que la veu que havien sentit no era la del seu pastor.

"Jo sóc el bon pastor" "No sou vosaltres els qui m'heu escollit a mi, sóc jo qui us ha escollit a vosaltres". A diferència del que és habitual en les nostres comarques, on el pastor tanca la marxa darrera del ramat, Ell anava al davant, traçant el camí, i sent el primer de creuar els senders perillosos. Tot el que els ordena de fer, Ell ho ha executat primer; coneix cadascun dels seus deixebles pel seu nom, i aquests també el coneixen a Ell, però aquest recíproc coneixement no és purament d'ordre intel·lectual,  sinó obra de l'amor. Si bé és cert que els pastors de la terra saben defensar els seus ramats contra els atacs dels llops, és molt estrany que arribin a morir per salvar-los. El bon Pastor de l'evangeli no es contenta amb preservar la vida de les seves ovelles, sinó que dóna voluntàriament la seva pròpia per elles.

L'Evangeli és la nostra guia: l'Eucaristia,  l'aliment que renova les nostres forces. Observeu, però, que Jesús no ens convida a una empresa solitària: només podem seguir-lo si estem incorporats a la societat de la qual Ell n'és el Cap, en el sí de la comunitat dels seus deixebles: la seva Església.
